Beta Day Three

Official Controller Support, Mount Costs Overhauled, and Layering Safety Timers Unveiled

s the closed beta for World of Warcraft: Forever enters its third consecutive day of live testing, developer dispatches and interviews continue to lay bare the vast mechanical infrastructure shaping Azeroth's next chapter. From unexpected accessibility breakthroughs to safety measures tailored for souls with only one life to lose, the latest revelations demonstrate how deeply Blizzard is rethinking the classic adventure.

Native Controller Support Arrives

In an interview with Sportskeeda featuring Senior Game Designer Michael Nuthals and Principal Game Designer Kris Zierhut, Blizzard confirmed that WoW: Forever will officially support controllers. While retail allows controller play through existing settings, developers noted that controller support in retail is "not great," whereas WoW: Forever provides official controller support natively in the client.

Beyond serving as an alternative input scheme, developers highlighted that controller support offers a vital accessibility option for players who do not want to—or cannot—sit at a traditional keyboard and mouse.

Mount Economy Overhauled: Expensive Training, Free Mounts

The Sportskeeda interview also detailed a structural change to mount costs. In classic World of Warcraft, mounts themselves carried high purchase prices. In WoW: Forever, Blizzard has shifted the gold cost into mount training:

Training Is the Gold Sink: Riding skill training costs 100 gold for standard riding and 1,000 gold for epic riding, depending on character level.
First Mount Is Free: Once an adventurer trains their riding skill, their first mount is provided for free.

Developers explained that maintaining aspirational gold sinks is healthy for the game's economy, and placing the primary cost on training creates a clear financial milestone for players.

Controlled Phasing & Hardcore Safety Timers

Addressing how server layering and zone instances operate in WoW: Forever, Blizzard has added a new notification system for forced phase shifts. Zones in World of Warcraft use layering technology to split player populations across identical copies of a zone. Previously, a forced phase change could instantly shift a player into a layer with different mob spawns or despawned nodes.

In WoW: Forever, when a forced phase transition is about to occur:

1. 5-Minute Advance Warning: Players receive a notification that a zone "refresh" is coming soon, giving them 5 minutes to travel to a safe area away from dangerous spawns, such as a road or town.
2. Manual Phase Trigger ("Refresh Now"): Once in a safe spot, players can click "Refresh Now" to trigger the phase shift immediately.
3. Interface Minimization ("Okay"): Players can click "Okay" to hide the notification. A chat-box arrow reminder maintains the countdown, allowing players to reopen the prompt and click "Refresh Now" when ready.

Revealed at BlizzCon, this phasing technology was built specifically with Hardcore players in mind, as an unannounced phase shift in dangerous territory could result in sudden character death.

Launch Raids & Discovery Mechanics

Additional developer interviews with But Why Tho? and MMORPG clarified raid and itemization policies:

No Attunements for Launch Raids: Confirmed by Lead Software Engineer Ana Resendez and Associate Production Director Clayton Stone, new raids available at launch will not require attunements.
Fixed Raid Tuning: Raids will feature set sizes of 10-, 20-, and 40-player groups without flex difficulty scaling. Boss difficulty will remain static, allowing players to out-gear or out-level encounters.
Obfuscated Item Stats: Confirmed by Senior Game Designer Josh Greenfield, item statistics across the game are hidden from data views until items actually drop in-game on a server, preventing pre-launch BiS list certainty and creating a "Wild West" period of discovery during week one of raiding.
Expanded Bank Storage: Starting default bank space is either double or quadruple the size of original Vanilla banks.

Behind the Scenes: Launch Day Infrastructure

Senior Game Producer Tom Ellis published a detailed breakdown on X (formerly Twitter) explaining the technical causes and fixes for the initial beta launch issues:

BGS Connection Throttling: Login disconnects occurred because the single regional Beta PTR environment hit Battle.net Game Service (BGS) metering protection. The connection limit was scaled from 2 to 8, resolving the login bottleneck.
Database Optimization: Heavy query volume on new and updated PTR database tables caused loot and quest hand-in delays. Oracle Database Engineers executed manual `DBMS_STATS` table analysis and scheduled automated maintenance jobs, restoring database performance instantly.
World Simulation Memory Leak: World simulation pools experienced high CPU usage and memory leaks because empty maps were not shutting down correctly. Classic engineers deployed a QA-tested fix and restarted the realms, adding extra world processes and regional services.

With server performance stabilized, the Camelot Chronicle will continue to report on verified developments as the beta testing progresses.
