Addons Disarmed & The Questing Revolution

Blizzard Standardizes UI Rules Across Forever & Outlines 1,000 New Quests

ot off the iron plates of the Great Steam-Press! Two massive technical dispatches have arrived from the developer halls covering the future of World of Warcraft: Forever!

First, Blizzard confirmed through the official UI Discord that the controversial addon disarmament rules debuting in modern Midnight will be enforced in Forever. Second, a fresh BlizzCon interview with Senior Game Designer Josh Greenfield and Senior Art Director Jeff Parrot detailed the design philosophy behind Forever, revealing that the game will feature over 1,000 brand-new quests and four expansive new zones.

Here is your full Wednesday morning breakdown synthesized directly from the realm dispatches!

Addon API Standardized: Midnight Disarmament Active in Forever

In a statement issued to the UI developer community, Blizzard clarified that WoW: Forever shares the exact same mainline client architecture as Midnight (version 12.1.5 under the hood). Because both game modes sit on the same core codebase, the sweeping addon restrictions introduced in Midnight will be active across Forever as well.

Key details from the announcement include:

Shared API Architecture: Forever and Midnight* (Standard) operate as two game types inside the same mainline codebase.
Secrets & Aura Containers Enforced: Addon API changes—including secret values and the `AuraContainer` / `AuraButton` restrictions introduced in Patch 12.1—will apply equally to Forever*.
No Competitive Advantage: Addons will be strictly prevented from solving mechanics, automating combat decisions, or providing unfair combat advantages.
WeakAuras Impact: Traditional complex automation scripts like WeakAuras will not function under the new restricted API. Addon creators will need to adapt to the modernized API, though popular unit frame UI suites like ElvUI and HealBot are already adjusting.

While some seasoned adventurers worry about losing legacy UI customizations, Blizzard emphasized that improvements made to the default base UI will carry over to ensure a smooth, clean player experience without requiring third-party crutches.

Designing Classic+: 1,000 New Quests & Four Frontier Zones

Meanwhile, in a new video interview published by Gamespot Wowhead ↗, developers Josh Greenfield and Jeff Parrot shared how the team is approaching quest design and world building for Classic+:

The 80% Rule: Greenfield noted the classic adage: "Ask 10 players what they want in Classic+, and you'll get 11 different answers."* The team's goal is to capture 80% of what almost everyone is looking for, offering optional toggles (such as HD/SD graphics and Transmog) so players can tailor their experience.
1,000 New Quests: Original Vanilla WoW featured roughly 3,000 to 3,500 quests. Forever* expands the world with 1,000 additional quests, introducing fresh story hooks starting as early as level 5.
Reworked Open World: Existing zones like the Wetlands and Azshara have received massive questing overhauls, bridging level gaps and fleshing out incomplete storylines.
Four New Frontier Zones: Each of the four brand-new zones will contain between 50 and 200 quests. The aesthetic goal for these zones is to feel so seamlessly integrated into Vanilla Azeroth that returning players will ask themselves, "Wait... did this zone exist back in 2004?"*
Season of Discovery Was Ephemeral: The developers reiterated that SoD was an experimental seasonal playground. Many of its wilder mechanics will not carry over into Forever, as Forever* is built as a permanent, grounded home for Classic+.
The Skyborne Heritage: Speaking on the new Skyborne race, the team shared that early designs were developed in consultation with Chris Metzen. Knowing how popular elf archetypes are, they drew upon the underutilized Skywall aesthetic (unseen since Cataclysm) to forge a distinct culture that fits naturally into the lore.

With closed beta testing kicking off this week, the realm stands on the threshold of a true Classic+ renaissance!
